How many people fit on a bench?+
Two adults on a 4ft, four on an 8ft, at the 24 inches per person that people actually sit at rather than the number you get by dividing. At a dining table plan three per 8ft side, because diners need elbow room that ceremony guests do not. Guests in formalwear take more space than guests in shirtsleeves, so round down for a black-tie event.
Are benches a good choice for a wedding ceremony?+
They are one of the few decisions that improves the ceremony and the logistics at the same time. Guests sit closer together, which makes a modest crowd look full rather than scattered. There are no gaps and no crooked rows, because a bench cannot drift the way a hundred chairs do between setup and the processional. And the aisle photograph reads as a clean line instead of a field of chair backs.
Do benches work at a long communal dining table?+
Yes, and this is the other place they earn their keep. At a feasting table, individual chairs consume the length in legs and gaps, and you lose seats to it. A bench down each side seats more people at the same table and reads as one deliberate line rather than a row of separate objects. Put chairs at the two heads so the ends still feel anchored.
Should I choose a wood bench or an upholstered one?+
Wood for ceremonies, outdoor settings and anywhere the look is meant to be rustic or architectural: the Henri, the Niagara in brown, the Sagano ash base. Upholstered for receptions, lounges and long dinners where guests will sit for hours, and for any room where the color needs to do work. Wood also handles weather and dust in a way that fabric does not.
How many colors do the upholstered benches come in?+
The Colette continental bench runs in fourteen: ivory, ivory boucle, pewter, black, moss, tiffany, sapphire, berry, crimson, rust, cinnamon, caramel and blush. That is the deepest single color run in our seating inventory, which makes it the piece to ask about when a palette has to be matched rather than approximated. Kincaid benches come in white, graphite, emerald, sapphire, champagne and dusty rose.
Do benches have backs?+
No. Every bench in this collection is backless, which is what keeps sightlines open across a ceremony and stops a communal table turning into a wall of seat backs in photographs. The trade-off is comfort over time, so see the question below before you seat a three-hour dinner on them.
Are benches comfortable for a long seated dinner?+
For an hour, yes. For a three-hour plated dinner, an upholstered bench is noticeably better than a wood one, and a mix of benches down the sides with chairs at the ends gives guests somewhere to move to. If the dinner is long and formal, use chairs and save the benches for the ceremony and the lounge.
Are benches faster to set than chairs?+
Considerably, and it shows up in your labor and in your room flip. One 8ft bench replaces four chairs, so a 120 guest ceremony is roughly 30 pieces to place instead of 120. If your venue has a tight turnaround between ceremony and reception in the same space, that difference is the flip.
Can benches be used outdoors?+
Wood benches, yes, without much thought. Upholstered benches will go outside too, but tell us the surface and whether they will sit in irrigation overspray or overnight dew, since fabric that gets wet in the evening will not be dry for the next morning. For a desert ceremony on decomposed granite, wood is the safer call.
Can I mix benches and chairs at the same table?+
It is the arrangement we recommend most often. Benches down the long sides, chairs at both heads. The chairs mark the ends of the table so it has a shape, older guests and anyone who wants a back has somewhere to sit, and you still get the clean unbroken line down the sides that made you want benches in the first place.
