What does a charger actually do?+
It fills the place setting before any food arrives. A table set with plates but no charger has a gap at every seat during the part of the evening guests spend looking at the room, which is cocktail hour and the walk to their seats. The charger closes that gap and anchors the napkin, the menu card and the place card on top of it.
When does the charger come off the table?+
Usually when the entree is served, and sometimes after the first course. That is the caterer's call and it depends on the service style. Worth knowing because it determines how long your most decorative tabletop piece is actually visible, and it is the reason the charger, not the dinner plate, is what your photographer shoots at the start of the night.
Do I actually need chargers?+
For a plated dinner where guests enter a set room, yes, and it is the cheapest thing that makes a table look finished. For a buffet, a family-style dinner or a cocktail reception with no seated service, no. Chargers on a table nobody sits at before the food arrives are money spent on something the room will not register.
How do I pick a charger against the plate and the linen?+
The charger is the transition between the two, so it should relate to both and match neither. A textured neutral charger under a coloured plate on an ivory linen works. A charger the same colour as the linen disappears and you have paid for an invisible layer. If you are ordering plates, chargers and linens from us, ask and we will put the three together before you commit.
Can food be served directly on a charger?+
No. A charger is an underplate, not a serving piece, and food goes on the plate that sits on it. This occasionally needs saying to a venue or a caterer who has not worked with them, so confirm it in the pre-event walkthrough rather than discovering it during service.
What can go on a custom printed charger?+
A logo, a monogram, artwork, a pattern, a menu, a seating detail. Send vector artwork and the colours you want. The thing to get right is contrast against whatever plate sits on top, because a printed charger with a large plate on it only shows its outer ring during dinner. Design to the ring, not to the whole circle.
When is a custom printed charger worth the money?+
When the table is being photographed and the photograph is going somewhere. A branded dinner, a sponsor table, a product launch, a gala with a named host. The charger is in every overhead shot of the setting, which no banner or sign can claim. For a wedding it is a monogram most guests will notice and few will mention, which is either the point or it is not.
How far ahead do custom chargers need to be ordered?+
Earlier than the rest of the order, because printing is produced rather than pulled from a shelf. Send us the artwork and the count as soon as the guest number is roughly settled, and treat it like the branding on a game or a bar rather than like a rental line. Ask us for the current lead time when you start the conversation.
How many chargers do I need?+
One per seated guest, plus spares. Unlike plates, chargers are not replaced mid-service, so the number is simply your final seated count with a margin for late additions. If you have a head table with different tabletop from the guest tables, count those separately, because that is the setting most people forget to add.
Which chargers suit a desert or southwest wedding?+
The textured neutrals and warm tones in the range work best against walnut and ash tables, sage and ivory linens and the Sedona plate collection. Send the venue and the palette and we will send photos of the two or three closest in stock rather than guessing from a name.
