Why does a lounge grouping need a rug?+
Because a ballroom floor has no edges. Four pieces of furniture on bare carpet or concrete read as objects that happened to end up near each other. Put a rug under them and the same four pieces read as a room. It is the cheapest structural decision in a lounge order and the one most often left off.
What size rug do I need?+
Large enough that at least the front legs of every seat sit on it. A rug that only reaches the coffee table makes the grouping look smaller than it is and creates a trip edge in the middle of where people walk. For a standard 10ft by 10ft grouping, plan on the rug covering most of that footprint.
Can rugs be used outdoors?+
Jute and cowhide go outside for an evening without much thought, on a patio, a deck or a level lawn. Keep them off wet grass and out of irrigation, because a natural fibre rug that soaks overnight does not dry before the next morning and it will not smell right when it does. Tell us the surface when you order.
Which rugs suit a desert or southwest event?+
The southwest range in cream, blush and teal, the tan Aztec, cowhide and overlay cowhide, and the jute weaves. These sit with walnut and ash furniture, terracotta and sage, and they photograph as Arizona rather than as a hotel lobby. Cowhide in particular does a lot of work in a room that is otherwise neutral.
Which rugs suit a modern or corporate room?+
Harmony in black, blue or sapphire, the black and white diamond, taupe abstract, olive modern and black antique. Flat patterns and controlled colour hold up next to a logo wall and under stage lighting, where a busy vintage pattern starts competing with the branding.
How many rugs do I need?+
One per grouping. A room with six lounge groupings takes six rugs, and they do not all have to match. Using two or three patterns across a large room gives each area its own identity while the furniture stays consistent, which is a cheaper way to vary a space than renting different furniture.
Should the rugs all match?+
Not necessarily. Matching reads as orderly and a little corporate, which is right for a conference. Varying the rug while keeping the furniture consistent reads as designed, which is right for a wedding or an activation. What does not work is varying both, which reads as whatever was available.
Are rugs a trip hazard?+
They can be, which is why placement matters more than people expect. A rug edge in a walking lane is a problem; a rug fully under a grouping, with the edge under furniture rather than in open floor, is not. We lay them as part of setup and we will flag any placement on your floor plan that puts an edge somewhere guests will be moving fast.
What is overlay cowhide?+
A cowhide laid on top of a larger rug rather than used on its own. It gives you the texture and the shape of a hide without the hide having to cover the whole footprint, and it works particularly well over jute, where the smooth hide against the coarse weave is the entire effect.
Can a rug go under a dining table?+
We would steer you away from it. Chairs pushed in and out over a rug catch, the rug takes food and wine, and it makes the table harder to level. Rugs belong under lounge groupings, at ceremony aisles and in activations. For a dining area, the linen does the work a rug would.
